Getting sick recently reminded me of just how fragile a writing routine can be. One minute I’m in the zone—writing daily, making progress—and the next, everything comes to a halt.
I used to find it daunting to get back on track. I’d beat myself up for the time lost. But over time, especially while writing on the road, I’ve learned how to be kinder to myself—and how to gently return to the work.
I bank time in my schedule
I look ahead at the week and identify pockets of time I can dedicate to writing. Then I show up no matter what. I might not always be focused, but carving out that time helps rebuild the habit.
I prioritize reading
Sometimes the best I can do is re-read something I’ve written before. If that doesn’t work, I turn to other writers. Books, essays, even social media posts that align with what I’m working on—anything that reignites the spark.
I write about the disruption
I let myself write about whatever took me away from my routine. Illness, overwhelm, inertia—it all becomes material. Reflecting on where I’ve been often leads to new ideas and opens up a flow state.
I use envy (in a good way)
Envy isn’t always bad—it’s energy. I’ll watch interviews or listen to podcasts with other writers. Seeing them make progress lights a fire under me—and reminds me I’m not alone in the struggle to return.
I rarely need all these strategies at once—just one or two usually gets the gears turning again. Writing is less about talent and more about returning to the page, over and over again.
Life will disrupt your routine. But every time you return, you strengthen the muscle. You prove to yourself that you’re a writer—not because you never falter, but because you always come back.
What helps you get back to your writing after a break?
